Tension prevailed in the temple town of Tirupati on Wednesday following a clash between the Congress and Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) activists.

Trouble began when about 100 activists of Congress reached the hotel where Chiranjeevi was staying in Tirupati and staged a sit-in alleging PRP was distributing cash to lure voters. However, PRP activists present at the hotel entered into an altercation with the Congress activists which escalated into exchange of blows and fisticuffs.

Additional forces were rushed to the spot and police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse both the groups.

Later, Chiranjeevi asked the police search his room to find out whether unauthorized cash was hidden in the room. But it is learnt the police left the place without searching the room.

Meanwhile, PRP leaders criticized the police as news of alleged searches spread across the state. The PRP chief told mediapersons that Congress was trying to unpopularise him by forcing the police to check his room.

PRP leaders across the state demanded an apology from the police and questioned whether the police have the courage to check the rooms of Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu.

The PRP leaders demanded that the Chittoor district superintendent of police and the field staff who had gone to check Chiranjeevi’s room should be replaced immediately.
