Under the scanner of the Supreme Court and Election Commission, Varun Gandhi on Wednesday filed his nomination papers from the Pilibhit Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, vowing not to “hit” anyone irrespective of his religion.

Chastened after his speeches that landed him in jail and a direction from the Supreme Court to maintain restraint, 29-year-old Mr. Gandhi filed his papers without fanfare.

Accompanied by his mother and MP from the constituency, Mr. Gandhi later addressed an election meeting. “This hand will rise only for defence…to protect people not to hit anyone irrespective of whichever religion he belongs to,” he said.

In his speeches last month, Mr. Gandhi threatened that any hand raised against Hindus would be chopped off. Though he claimed that the CDs containing his speeches were doctored, the Supreme Court took an undertaking that he would not make any inflammatory speeches, before releasing him on a 15-day parole.

Mr. Gandhi is making his debut against his uncle and Congress leader P.M. Singh. “I believe in non-violence. In my whole life I have not killed even a mosquito, let alone human beings,” Mr. Gandhi said in his speech. He also alleged that he was humiliated and tortured when in jail.
Ms. Maneka Gandhi thanked the people for their “bravery and pride” with which they “protected” her son. “I am handing over my son to you. Give him the same love what you gave.,” she said.
