HYDERABAD: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao geared up his party organisation for his indefinite fast beginning at 11 a.m. at Siddipet on Sunday even as the police machinery prepared itself to foil his plans and counter the fallout.

Although the police top brass refused to reveal its hand, thousands of policemen were posted in Karimnagar where KCR was camping on Saturday, an indication that they may take him into custody even before he could travel to Siddipet in Medak district, 70 km away. All that a senior officer would say was that the action would depend on situation prevailing on ground.

Sensing the plans of the government, Mr. Rao said he would end his life for the cause of Telangana statehood if the government foiled his proposed fast. He said he would continue his hunger strike even in jail.

Police took into preventive custody dozens of TRS leaders and workers in several parts of Telangana. Prominent among those arrested was Janashakti leader Kura Rajanna. He was picked up while leading a rasta-roko at Siddipet after the police foiled his meeting with TRS workers. He was later shifted to Sangareddy. Some people who were arrested near Dubbaka launched a fast in the local police station.

In Karimnagar, police personnel outnumbered the TRS workers outside Mr. Rao’s residence. A mobile party also moved around continuously near the house.
Visitors screened

Visitors to the town screened at several check-posts en route the town. They even undertook a thorough check of hotels and the bus station much to the embarrassment of visitors.

TRS cadre managed to sneak into Siddipet town in spite of the tight vigil by the police. A few hundred party workers even made it to the elevated platform where Mr. Rao is scheduled to sit on fast.
