Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani Saturday spoke to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and congratulated him on the surprise victory for the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the national elections.

During the brief conversation, Manmohan Singh thanked Advani, who was prime ministerial candidate for the opposition National Democratic Alliance, and sought both his support and constructive criticism in running the government, an official in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.

“We must open a new chapter in the working relations between the government and the principal opposition,” the official quoted the prime minister’s as telling Advani, the leader of the opposition in the present Lok Sabha.

Earlier in the day, when trends pointed towards a victory of sorts for the UPA, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit met with the prime minister at his official residence. The Congress has made a clean sweep of all seven seats in the capital.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi also greeted the prime minister, while Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was first among the foreign dignitaries, said the PMO official.

“The prime minister also managed to attend to some official work.”

According to Congress general secretary Prithvi Raj Chavan, the prime minister also watched television in the morning.

“Given the current economic situation, he was extremely concerned about formation of a stable government,” he told reporters, adding a meeting of the cabinet would be called in the next two-three days.

Chavan said the party will have its own meeting and Sonia Gandhi will nominate leaders of both the houses in parliament before formally approaching President Pratibha Patil for the formation of the new government.

Under the scanner of the Supreme Court and Election Commission, Varun Gandhi on Wednesday filed his nomination papers from the Pilibhit Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, vowing not to “hit” anyone irrespective of his religion.

Chastened after his speeches that landed him in jail and a direction from the Supreme Court to maintain restraint, 29-year-old Mr. Gandhi filed his papers without fanfare.

Accompanied by his mother and MP from the constituency, Mr. Gandhi later addressed an election meeting. “This hand will rise only for defence…to protect people not to hit anyone irrespective of whichever religion he belongs to,” he said.

In his speeches last month, Mr. Gandhi threatened that any hand raised against Hindus would be chopped off. Though he claimed that the CDs containing his speeches were doctored, the Supreme Court took an undertaking that he would not make any inflammatory speeches, before releasing him on a 15-day parole.

Mr. Gandhi is making his debut against his uncle and Congress leader P.M. Singh. “I believe in non-violence. In my whole life I have not killed even a mosquito, let alone human beings,” Mr. Gandhi said in his speech. He also alleged that he was humiliated and tortured when in jail.
Ms. Maneka Gandhi thanked the people for their “bravery and pride” with which they “protected” her son. “I am handing over my son to you. Give him the same love what you gave.,” she said.

Not being a narcissist, I was surprised by my sudden urge to look into the magic mirror. I was more surprised to see myself sitting idle in an Indiramma house and watching colour TV. Someone looking official knocked the door, entered and gave me Rs 2000.
Is this the state of affairs to come after General Election 2009 which viciously violates my fundamental right to live with dignity, equality before law and right to work guaranteed by the Constitution of India (CoI)?

When I am exercising my right to franchise, I am electing a representative from my constituency, who will uphold the CoI, perform within the purview of the Laws of the Land and generously indulge in good governance so that my fundamental rights are not violated and I can work, earn and make both ends meet, so that I can walk with my head held high.

Just because I am a white ration card holder, am I entitled to live in a free house, watch colour TV and freely get Rs 2000 per month which is paid to me from the taxes paid by honest citizens from their hard earned salaries or profits?

Is giving out doles to white ration card holders not violation of the CoI guaranteed fundamental right of equality before law and the right to livelihood? Aren’t the non-white card holders discriminated against?

If giving money, liquor and other freebies before the voting day to purchase someone’s vote is an offence, then how come giving Colour TV and Rs 2000 per month after getting elected is right and lawful? Bribe or any corrupt inducement does not change its definition by the affix of BEFORE and suffix of AFTER

Citizens of India, beware of power-hungry wolves in sheep’s clothing who are promising the moon to usurp authority bereft of responsibility.

Do surely cast your vote. But, choose someone who is worthy of your right to vote.

A former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office-bearer Thursday created a sensation by throwing a wooden slipper at senior party leader L.K. Advani when Advani was going up on stage to address a public meeting in Madhya Pradesh.

The man, identified as Pawas Agarwal, threw a ‘khadaun’ or slipper made of wood at Advani, saying he was “a fake iron man” and did not deserve to be the BJP’s prime ministerial aspirant. The incident took place in Katni district, 350 km from here.

The slipper missed Advani, but he became the latest victim of a series of ’shoe-throwing’ incidents in the country. A former Katni district president of the BJP, Agarwal was taken into custody by police.

He said the BJP should project some other leader as its prime ministerial candidate.

Agarwal told mediapersons that Advani was “nakli Lauh Purush” (a fake iron man). “He has no ideology. On the one hand he asks for votes in the name of Ram and on the other hand pays obeisance to (Pakistan founder Mohammed Ali) Jinnah,” he said.

On why he did not raise the issue at a party platform, Agarwal said: “None of the party leaders had the courage to communicate these feelings because they too were not allowed to speak.”

Rival Congress was quick to react. Party general secretary Arvind Malviya said in Bhopal: “It was the result of the BJP’s double speak and its intention to exploit public sentiments in the name of religion.”

Earlier this month, Home Minister P. Chidambaram and then Congress MP Naveen Jindal were also targeted by people who wanted to express their anger by throwing footwear at these politicians.

he Times of India is in the forefront bringing out its first assessment of the state of play in the coming Lok Sabha election. About five weeks ago, the ToI published a state-wise analysis of how parties and alliances are placed, where they can hope to gain and where they could lose.

The Ides of March seem to have made some alliances coming apart, some getting severely strained and new ones being put together.

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA), which is bereft of Lalu Prasad’s RJD, Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP or Mulayam Singh’s SP, is likely to win around 200 seats. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which does not include Naveen Patnaik’s BJD, is estimated to get about 174 seats. The Red Left may just get less than 34 seats.

The latest ToI assessment is that UPA is down by 3 seats, NDA is down by 19 and the Left is left with 5 seats less than the figures mentioned in para ante.

The non-UPA-NDA-Left bloc appears to take an upward swing and might account for as many as 134 seats. Out of these seats, the so-called Third Front comprising of Mayawati’s BSP, Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP, Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK, Vaiko’s MDMK, Ramadoss’s PMK and Deve Gowda’s JD-S could account for about 110 MPs, Left included.

Others and independents, including the SP, RJD, LJP and some smaller parties, could be close to 60 seats.

In the conundrum of a fractured verdict, any party with 150-plus seats stands a good chance of leading the next government at the center.

With more and more awareness that is rising among the educated classes to utilize their vote and choose the right leader, even the politicians are getting smarter and trendy. Here is the case of one man who seems to have taken the corporate style of canvassing for his candidature.

His name is NVSS Prabhakar and he belongs to the BJP party. Prabhakar is contesting from the Uppal segment and he is said to be a Btech, MBA. There is news that Prabhakar has actually taken in few girls who have got call center experience and set up a small unit.

The job of these girls with beautiful voices is to make calls to the voters of his constituency and speak to them urging them to vote for Prabhakar. This is a variety canvassing in ‘corporate style’ that is said to be happening in the areas of Uppal and let us see if Prabhakar’s ‘Call Center’ concept will work or not.

Noted danseuse and Padma Shri award winner, Mallika Sarabhai, will be contesting elections against LK Advani from Gandhinagar. She announced her intention to contest the Lok Sabha polls as an independent candidate from Gujarats Gandhinagar parliamentary seat and take on L.K.Advani, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate. She added that she will represent the “secular forces”.

Sarabhai is the daughter of classical dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai and the renowned space scientist, late Vikram Sarabhai. She has been a staunch critic of Chief Minister Narendra Modi since the 2002 Godhra riots in which nearly 1,500 people were killed.

Contesting under the banner of ‘Friends for Democracy’ and supported by social activists and NGOs, Sarabhai claims Gandhinagar is her home as she was born and brought up in the city.

The BJP is returning to its three core Hindutva issues, namely construction of Ram temple at the site of the demolished Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Uniform Civil Code and abolition of Article 370 giving special status to Jammu and Kashmir, after a gap of 11 years, when it releases its manifesto here tomorrow.

The BJP has avoided this in last two general elections, 1999 and 2004, when leading the NDA alliance it attempted to project itself as “secular” leading partner of a cohesive alliance.

Similarly another move by the BJP to enact a law to ban cow slaughter throughout the country was also dropped because of similar opposition from the “secular” allies. This may also find a mention in the BJP manifesto tomorrow.

Here are some of the highlights of the BJP manifesto for Andhra 2009 Assembly Elections.
* Formation of Telangana state in 100 days,
* Farmers’ loan waiver for upto Rs 50,000,
* A scheme to deposit Rs 21,116 for girl child

Acting on Varun Gandhi’s plea seeking quashing of the National Security Act slapped against him, the Supreme Court on Thursday issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and the District Magistrate of Pilibhit, seeking their response on the issue.

Varun in his plea had contended that the Mayawati led UP government had filed a case under the NSA only to ruin his political career.

The court has posted the matter to April 13 for further hearing.

“We have also requested the court to release Varun Gandhi so that he can campaign and file his nomination for the Lok Sabha polls. The court has thus posted the hearing to April 13,” said Varun’s counsel.

Varun has been kept under preventive detention by the Uttar Pradesh government under the National Security Act for his alleged inflammatory speech in Pilibhit. He is currently lodged in the Etah jail under tight security following intelligence reports about threat to his life.

He looks determined to bag the seat that placed him in the Union Cabinet in the previous government. After a “surprise” loss in the last elections, he is taking no chance this time and hitting the lanes and by-lanes, so familiar to him, early in the morning. He reminds people of what he has done for the city and not just his constituency.

The BJP candidate for the Secunderabad LS seat, B. Dattatreya, kicked off his campaign in style from Warasiguda on Wednesday helping a labourer download coconut bags from a lorry and kissing an infant even as his followers reminded that it all reflected his simplicity and down-to-earth nature. As his specially designed vehicle fitted with mikes, along with his followers on bikes snaked through the small lanes inviting curious people to come out of their house, Mr. Dattatreya raised issues that touched the common man. He raised the issue of the spiralling prices of essential commodities and how hard the middle and lower income groups were hit. “But this government talks high of its performance when people have to spend Rs. 30 to buy a kg of rice despite bumper crop in the last five years,” he said.

Mr. Dattatreya alleged that corruption levels of the Congress have not just affected individuals but the State itself. He said people had to lose Metro Rail due to the greed of Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy and they should question this government. “I was instrumental in getting money for MMTS, Krishna water, flyovers and Vambay houses in the city,” he reminded them. But this government concentrated more on selling lands and less on people’s welfare.

Mr. Dattatreya didn’t confine himself to just local issues, but also national issues like the failure of the UPA government in containing terrorism. He talked about how the blasts in Hyderabad shattered the confidence of the common man and the image of the city.Accompanied by the Secunderabad Assembly seat candidate Shanigarapu Ramesh Chakra, he campaigned in Warasiguda, Mohdguda and Chilkalguda divisions.
