HYDERABAD: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao geared up his party organisation for his indefinite fast beginning at 11 a.m. at Siddipet on Sunday even as the police machinery prepared itself to foil his plans and counter the fallout.

Although the police top brass refused to reveal its hand, thousands of policemen were posted in Karimnagar where KCR was camping on Saturday, an indication that they may take him into custody even before he could travel to Siddipet in Medak district, 70 km away. All that a senior officer would say was that the action would depend on situation prevailing on ground.

Sensing the plans of the government, Mr. Rao said he would end his life for the cause of Telangana statehood if the government foiled his proposed fast. He said he would continue his hunger strike even in jail.

Police took into preventive custody dozens of TRS leaders and workers in several parts of Telangana. Prominent among those arrested was Janashakti leader Kura Rajanna. He was picked up while leading a rasta-roko at Siddipet after the police foiled his meeting with TRS workers. He was later shifted to Sangareddy. Some people who were arrested near Dubbaka launched a fast in the local police station.

In Karimnagar, police personnel outnumbered the TRS workers outside Mr. Rao’s residence. A mobile party also moved around continuously near the house.
Visitors screened

Visitors to the town screened at several check-posts en route the town. They even undertook a thorough check of hotels and the bus station much to the embarrassment of visitors.

TRS cadre managed to sneak into Siddipet town in spite of the tight vigil by the police. A few hundred party workers even made it to the elevated platform where Mr. Rao is scheduled to sit on fast.

TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao’s sudden decision to leave for New Delhi on Thursday evening along with his family led to speculations in political circles that he was up to some game plan to contain the growing rebellion within the party.

Rao, it may be mentioned, is known for creating political drama whenever he smells a crisis in the party. Soon after the polling in the state, he had gone to Delhi and announced his support to NDA, giving an impression that NDA was all set to come to power.

His decision to call off the state executive meeting scheduled to be held on Friday and leave for the national capital had led to all kinds of speculation.

His nephew and party leader T Harish Rao sought to clarify that there was no political agenda in KCR’s Delhi visit. He told the media that KCR had gone to Delhi to take part in the oath-taking ceremony of newly-elected members of Lok Sabha on June 1 and that he would return the next day. But he did not explain why KCR first scheduled the state executive meeting and then left for Delhi abruptly, that too four days ahead of the Lok Sabha session. Harish Rao maintained that KCR’s trip is nothing but a holiday tour which he planned to spend with his family.

Cracks are developing in the TRS monolith after the debacle it has suffered in the recent Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Even as a new outfit – Telangana Vimochana Samiti (TVS) – spearheaded by TRS MLC from Warangal K Dileep Kumar is taking birth as an alternative force, newly-elected Medak MP and TRS secretary general Vijayashanthi is reportedly contemplating bidding goodbye to the party. According to sources, Vijayashanthi is planning to quit the party since she believes there is no future for the TRS and it is time she looked for greener pastures. There is, however, no official confirmation about her quitting.

Meanwhile, Dileep Kumar is going ahead with his new outfit. He reportedly decided to have his own organisation after a heated exchange with TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao over the decisions taken by the latter in the run up to the polls that brought disastrous results for the party. Though Kumar claims the TVS is an apolitical organisation, its genesis and contours suggest it might emerge as an alternative to the TRS.

Speaking in this regard, Kumar says a political initiative for securing statehood to Telangana has to be backed by a mass movement and the TVS fits the bill in this respect.

That the TVS has seriously got down to the business is evident from the fact that former TRS MP Ravindra Nayak has already declared his support for the outfit apart from some leaders from other parties and intellectuals of the region. The TVS leaders are also in touch with TRS thinktank Prof Jayashankar, Kodandaram and Gadar. Kumar is planning to have a meeting with likeminded persons here tomorrow.

Meanwhile, raising his voice against the `unilateral’ decisions of TRS chief Chandrasekhara Rao, especially in allotment of tickets, that allegedly led to the poor performance of the party in the polls, Ravindra Naik said, “If the TRS chief does not change his attitude, the party will fold up very soon.” “Today, the TRS is KCR’s family party,” he further said indicating a growing resentment in the party over the manner in which the party chief is functioning.

It is now more or less official. Telangana Rashtra Samithi will join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance after the declaration of results.

TRS president K Chandrasekhara Rao on Saturday accepted an invitation from Punjab Chief Minister and Akali Dal president Prakash Singh Badal to attend the rally of NDA to be held at Ludhiana on Sunday. KCR and his colleagues will participate in the rally, thereby ending the speculations about the TRS stand in the post-poll scenario.

KCR met senior BJP leader L K Advani on Friday and discussed the post-poll situation. Advani also asked him to join the NDA rally. TRS leaders have already declared that the party was free to choose its option of joining any coalition, including the NDA, which would grant separate statehood to Telangana region. With the TRS deciding to join the NDA, its links with Mahakutami would be once and for all severed.

While Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K Chandrasekhara Rao is inclining towards the Bharatiya Janata Party, his deputy and party secretary general Vijayashanti feels that Mahakootami is the best choice for the party.

She said the TRS would continue its alliance with Mahakutami even after the polls. “It is certain that the grand alliance will come to power this time and the TRS will be part of it. There is no question of having a tie-up with the Congress,” she said.

Vijayashanti, however, did not comment openly against TRS-NDA tie-up, but party sources say she expressed her reservations with KCR in this regard. She is also unhappy with the way KCR had ignored her, while going on Delhi trip. “As the party’s secretary general, he should have involved me in the policy decisions,” she is learnt to have commented at her associates.

Prajarajyam chief Chiranjeevi and Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K Chandrasekhar Rao are in no mood to let their guard down and take a break after the gruelling campaign unlike chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu. While the CM is cooling off in Shimla, Naidu headed off to an unknown destination in Europe.

Having received information that Congress “money managers’’ are on the prowl to poach their candidates, both Chiranjeevi and KCR are on an alert and are taking steps to keep the flock together.

The two leaders have reportedly started fortification measures to prevent the cash-rich Congress getting anywhere near their candidates.

Though both parties are ready to join hands with the Congress if the situation warrants, it is the ‘retail purchase’ of candidates that they fear. The negotiation or bargaining should be at the party level and not at the individual level, sources of PRP and TRS said.

Sources said it is the PRP which is more worried, as the party is said to have gathered information that some of its candidates have already been ‘won over’ by influential Congress candidates in several constituencies. Suspicion has fallen on some important leaders who joined the party just before the elections.

For now, Chiranjeevi has no plans to detain his candidates in the office or pack them off to a summer resort. But once the results are out on May 16, a camp to keep the victorious candidates together is not ruled out. This again depends on the number of seats it would win, sources said.

In the meantime, the actor-turned-politician is indulging in psychological operations to keep up the spirits of his herd. In the ongoing district-wise review meetings with candidates, Chiranjeevi is trotting out theories of silent revolution, huge turnout of women and youth, etc., and trying to convince the candidates that the party would form the government winning at least 160 seats.

The scene in the TRS is different. Telangana Bhawan, the party headquarters, has turned into an impregnable fortress since the last several days. The party chief has plans to detain all the candidates in the office from May 15 onwards.

The elected MLAs of the party will not be allowed to come out till the new government is formed. Sources said even the cellphone calls would be monitored.

The need for such precaution in the TRS has arisen following the split engineered in the party by the Congress in the 2004 elections.

KCR wants to keeps his options open and is not averse to even back the BJP led NDA if he thinks that they have a chance to from the government at the centre. The BJP’s statement that it will give separate Telangana within 100 days of assuming office is too hard to resist for KCR.

HYDERABAD: TRS leaders are in a jubilant mood following positive results indicated by a survey that was commissioned by the party recently.

According to the survey, TRS would win at least 27 assembly and six Lok Sabha seats. TRS contested 45 assembly and nine Lok Sabha seats as part of a seat-sharing agreement with the TDP-led Grand Alliance. Voting in these constituencies were held during the first phase of the polls on April 16.

According to a senior TRS leader, the party had performed “tremendously well” in north Telangana compared to south Telangana districts. In Karimnagar district, the party would win eight out of 10 assembly seats. In Warangal, Adilabad, Nizamabad and Medak districts, the party can bag 14 seats out of 18 contested as per the survey, he told TOI.

The survey however said that the winning chances are very bleak in south Telangana districts — Nalgonda, Mahbubnagar and Ranga Reddy districts. It will win only four seats out of 11 contested in these three districts. TRS fought from six assembly constituencies under Hyderabad and Secunderabad parliament constituencies. Party hopes that three seats would fall into its kitty.

The six parliament constituencies which the party is likely to win includes Mahbubnagar and Medak from where party president KCR and secretary general Vijayashanthi contested respectively. The party thinks that they would win with a majority of one lakh votes each.

The constituencies where the party is facing an uphill task are Peddapalli, Hyderabad and Warangal parliament constituencies, the sources said.

According to the survey, TRS and TDP leaders and workers worked together which helped in consolidating the vote bank of the two parties particularly in areas where TRS was weak.

However, in some assembly constituencies like Nalgonda and Mahbubnagar considered to be TDP bastions, TRS did not get not expected co-operation from the former and this could be one of the reasons for the party losing seats in south Telangana.

Political realignment appeared to take place in the state on Monday with the TDP and CPM exploring the possibility of roping in regional parties to consolidate the Third Front even as TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao indicated that he would prefer not to sail with the TDP in the state in case either a Congress or BJP-led government takes over at the Centre.

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat flew in from New Delhi and had a four hour meeting with TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu at the latter’s residence. With Naidu sounding confident that a Grand Alliance government will take shape in the state, the two leaders explored the formation of a non-Congress and non-BJP led government at the Centre.

However, Grand Alliance partner TRS seemed to prefer a Congress-TRS-PRP coalition in the state over and above a Grand Alliance coalition of which it is a partner with the TDP and the two Left parties. “A TDP led government in the state will not find favour with either a Congress or BJP ruled government at the Centre as both these national parties would perceive the TDP as a natural ally of the Left parties,” a TRS leader said.

But TDP leaders said KCR is jumping the gun as the results are not yet out. “The TRS has contested 9 Lok Sabha seats. It has to win at least 4 to 5 seats in order to get the bargaining chip at the Centre. Without a few seats under his belt, it is too premature for him to explore the options with the Congress or the BJP,” a TDP leader said.

KCR was scheduled to leave for New Delhi on Sunday and meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi and BJP leader L K Advani. “The BJP has promised Telangana within 100 days of coming to power. And if the Congress gives us an assurance on granting Telangana, we will not be averse to supporting a Congress-led government at the Centre and forming a coalition of the Congress, TRS and the PRP in the state,” a TRS leader said.

Naidu appeared to have prevailed upon KCR to postpone his New Delhi trip by assuring him over telephone on Monday that the TDP is committed to granting Telangana and that the same has been promised in the party’s election manifesto. But with KCR indicating that he would prefer the Congress or the BJP at the Centre, how long before the two part ways is the moot question.

A sort of uneasiness is prevailing in the Mahakootami, even after polling is completed all over the state. Though the four partners in Mahakootami – Telugu Desam, Telangana Rashtra Samithi, CPI and CPI-M – managed to share the seats, there has not been much cohesion among them during the campaign. Except in a few places, they participated in the campaign reluctantly.

The polling is over now, but the partners are still criticising one another for bungling in seat sharing. The TRS has gone a bit further and given an indication that it might as well slip out of the Mahakootami, if the situation demands. TRS president K Chandrasekhara Rao’s comment that he would join hands with any alliance that would give Telangana has become the top story in all the dailies on Sunday. He made it clear that the TRS would not hesitate to support the NDA, if the latter agrees to give separate Telangana. Though the Left parties, for the time being, are ruling out joining hands with the Congress at the Centre in the post-poll scenario, they might change their stand in order to prevent the NDA coming to power, if there is no other alternative. As such, the Left position in the country is bad – in West Bengal and Kerala, the CPI-M is likely to lose heavily. In such a scenario, it might go back to the Congress fold sooner or later.

This means, TD president N Chandrababu Naidu will once again become a loner in Andhra Pradesh. If the TD comes to power on its own, it is well and good; but if does not happen, all his dreams would be shattered.

Yet other interesting news of the day is the Central government’s order stopping mining activities in five Obulapuram mines in Anantapur district, belonging to mining tycoon Gali Janardhan Reddy. The surprising element in this episode is that the Centre has taken the decision after the elections: everybody knows Gali’s money has flown like water in the AP elections because of his proximity with Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. This was apparently to curtail him from benefiting the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka. As expected, it was a big news only for Eenadu and Andhra Jyothy, but not for Sakshi.

Since there won’t be much development in the state till May 16 when the results would be out, it is the field day for all the dailies to write whatever they want and speculate whatever they can!
