The PRP had looked into the candidatures of various leaders to face the money-rich sitting MP, Badiga Ramakrishna, of the Congress. Though the party has senior leaders like Buragadda Vedavyas, from this segment, the PRP had considered the candidature of TD’s former minister, Simhadri Satyanarayana Rao’s son, Dr Chandrasekhar. However, the PRP dropped it in the last minute.

At one point, Chiranjeevi had scanned the candidature of Vangaveeti Radhakrishna from here. Even before that, Chiranjeevi had hinted at fielding his brother-in-law, Allu Aravind, from here. It was felt that Aravind’s candidature would have positive impact on several Assembly segments in the area, which is dominated by the Kapu community.

Having explored all these possibilities, the PRP leadership had imported a Kadapa leader, Ramachandraiah, to this seat. The announcement had come as a rude shock for the PRP leaders and the cadre, as it reflected the poor political strategy of the PRP bosses.

Importing a candidate from Rayalaseema also reflects the bankruptcy of the Praja Rajyam Party, as it is understood by the cadre here. Interestingly, this import of candidature would also become handy for the rivals to counter the party and it would surely have adverse impact on the party candidates for the Assembly seats in the district.

It is to be seen how the PRP would avoid such a situation and go ahead in the elections.

“Manemma promised to construct a hospital, improve roads and provide safe drinking water. We made her Musheerabad MLA believing her, but after the by-elections she disappeared. Our children frequently fall in drains when it rains. Will you solve our problems,” asked the womenfolk from this low income group settlement.

That it was her first and tentative step in electoral politics was very much evident in her campaign style. There were no door-to-door visits, no public address system and no open jeep, which would have facilitated her interaction with voters more effectively.Her private security guarded her jealously, not allowing even the local women to come closer to her.

There was no fanfare and the local leaders meant to guide her in the electoral maze, had this ‘chalta hai’ countenance about them. All the actor could manage to do was just stand out of her car’s sunroof and wave at the residents with a big smile.

Despite these limitations, thanks largely to her star power, women simply thronged her cavalcade. At one or two places she got down from her car to interact with women, who were waiting for her in groups along the road. “We need someone to work for us sincerely. We need basic amenities to improve,” was the common refrain among women. “If you don’t have faith in politicians then I hope at least you have faith in the name Jayasudha. Please have trust and elect me. I may not have experience in politics but I have done enough social work and can bring a positive change in your lives,” she promised wherever she went.

ELURU: It was a ‘mega surprise’ for the 10,000-odd inhabitants of Mogaltur, tucked away on the sea coast in Narsapur mandal of West Godavari district, with a midnight visit by its ‘son of the soil’ and actor-turned PR president Chiranjeevi.

Quite away from the din of the elections, he drove down to his birthplace and enjoyed the cool breeze and the rhythm of the sea waves with which he was quite familiar since his childhood days. However, none of the villagers got a glimpse of the mega star as the visit took place when the whole village was asleep.

Trip down memory lane

Mr. Chiranjeevi revealed his ‘surprise visit’ while interacting with mediapersons at Tadepalligudem. “When I reached Malkipuram near Tadepalligudem after finishing my road show in East Godavari district, I hit upon this idea to spend some time at my birthplace. Soon, I got off my ‘ratham’ and went to Mogaltur in a car which helped me take the trip down memory lane. It was quite a thrilling experience,” the PR chief said in elation.

Mr. Chiranjeevi visited Mogaltur nearly two decades ago in connection with a film shoot. “I like it (Mogaltur) very much, as I was born and played there,” an emotional Chiru said. Talking to The Hindu, Tangella Satyanarayana, who purchased the tiled house from his maternal grandfather in Mogaltur where Mr. Chiranjeevi was born, expressed dismay over the scrolls of Chiru’s visit being shown on TV.

Asked why he had opted for Palacole, instead of Narsapur under which Mogaltur fell, the PR president said; “It’s the decision taken by the elders in the party, keeping in mind certain equations.”
