HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam has regretted that ‘injustice’ had been done to the State in terms of the poor representation in the Union Council of Ministers and charged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy with lack of will to pursue the State’s agenda. At a press conference here on Thursday, senior leader T. Sitaram said that although 33 Congress MPs were elected from the State, Dr. Reddy managed to secure only one Cabinet rank Minister and four Ministers of State.

In comparison, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, that sent lesser number of Congress and Trinamool Congress MPs, had bagged many more berths while the NCP could get three. He regretted that the North-South divide still continued despite better performance. Of the 78-strong Union Cabinet, only 26 were from the South, he said.

The recent election scenario was a dramatic tale of twists and turns for the Telugu Desam party and just when people were thinking that it might well be losing its existence with key members walking away and joining the Praja Rajyam Party and Congress, they managed to bounce back and were also successful in forming a Grand Alliance (which didn’t work). Now, one episode has been the highlight of the election and that has been the presence of cine stalwarts and their campaigning. While on one end, there was megastar Chiranjeevi who jumped into active politics with his Praja Rajyam Party, the TDP roped in the Nandamuri big gun Balakrishna. After a lot of drama, even young tiger junior NTR joined the fray and that for a moment had spiked up the graphs of popularity for the TDP. Young tiger junior NTR has often been known for his high voltage emotional dialogues on the screen and they have enough ammunition to get the crowds to the theatres.

So he seems to have used something similar during the election canvassing when thousands gathered to have a look at him while he was rolling out his dialogues in full flow. The media projected him like a true successor to the legendary N T Rama Rao and in no time, junior became a demigod, thanks to the exaggeration from the news channels. Live coverages were provided to every speech of Junior NTR and experts started putting in high numbers for the Telugu Desam due to this. However, in no time, all those castles came down crashing to the ground once the election results were seen. The places where junior gave his speeches scored the least results for the Mahakootami and in no time, the same channels that termed him as the oxygen for TDP took the breath out of him and gave a realistic feel that reel life and real life are two different things. Even the likes of Balayya and Chiru failed to impress the crowds and it remains to be seen if folks like junior NTR, Balakrishna, Chiranjeevi have learnt their lessons from this or not.

Way back in the year 1983, the legendary N T Rama Rao created a landslide with his ‘Teluguvaadi Atma Gauravam’ concept but then it must be said that it was not only his charisma but also the resentment among the people over the languishing Congress government at that point of time. So if people like Chiru or Chandrababu expected that film glamour will fill their vote banks, then they have seen the outcome of it clearly now.

Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu is throwing a huge thanks-giving party at Moutain Heights at Madhapur for all the leaders and cadres, who had worked for the success of party in the elections and also those who played key role in his “Mee Kosam” yatra.

This party is said to have been arranged to please the party leaders, who were grumbling for being neglected by Naidu on the earlier occasion. The TDP president, a couple of days ago, hosted a big party at a star hotel in Madhapur for a select few VVIPs of the party, including his close pals like CM Ramesh and Sujana Chowdary, who played key role in selection of candidates and formation of Mahakootami. This has angered the genuine party leaders and cadres, who toiled day and night for the party in the elections.

Naidu came to know about this and asked his seniors to arrange party for all the others. He would be attend the party and express thanks to all of them, before leaving on his foreign tour.

Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi is learnt to have changed his mind and decided to retain Tirupati assembly seat, if he wins. According to party sources, Chiranjeevi has even asked the local leaders to purchase a house for him in Tirupati, so that he would stay in that house whenever he comes to the temple town. This talk was widely spread in the town much before the second phase of polling. The way he stayed put in Tirupati, rather than Palakollu, to oversee polling on April 23 itself gave an assurance to the voters that he would retain the seat.

Earlier, there was a talk that Chiranjeevi would retain Palakollu seat and resign from Tirupati, if he wins both the seats. His own party leader Ch Harirama Jogaiah confirmed this. This led to a lot of criticism and the Opposition parties tried to cash in on this talk in Tirupati.

Exuding confidence of his victory in Tirupati, Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi has ruled out hung Assembly in the State.

Addressing a media conference here today after end of final phase of polling in the State, he said the PRP would win 95 to 108 seats of the total 140 Assembly constituencies that went to polls. Denying the match-fixing charge of TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu, he said people were well aware of the ties between the Congress and TDP behind the scene. The Congress and the TDP were the two sides of the same coin called corruption, he said.

On PRP’s political alliance at the national level, he said the interests of the State were paramount for them. “We are for the people, their decision is ours,’’ he said, ruling out any alliance with either the Congress or BJP. Exuding confidence that he would win from both Tirupati and Palacole, he said: “Both segments are dear to me. I will adopt one constituency, while representing the other.’’ Hyderabad: The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) claimed that true democracy would dawn in the State on May 16 as the ‘anarchist’ Congress government would fade away.

People wanted a change of regime, it claimed.

Speaking to mediapersons here today, party vice-president T Devendar Goud, general secretary Allu Aravind and political affairs committee member P Upendra said it was quite clear from the way people voted enthusiastically right from early in the morning that they wanted Chiranjeevi to become the Chief Minister.

Allu Aravind said he had seen long queues of women and youth at several polling booths and most of them had cast their vote by 10 am.

Stating that high poll percentage was a pointer to anti-establishment vote, Aravind said the poll percentage recorded on Thursday clearly showed that the voters were against Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. “I thought poll percentage would be about 65, but it looks like it might reach 75. The huge turnout indicates people’s affection for Chiranjeevi,” Aravind claimed.

Even though TD president N Chandrababu Naidu knew well that he had lost the elections, he was putting up a brave face, he alleged.

Both the Congress and TDP were claiming 230 seats each which was ridiculous as the total seats were 294, Aravind said.

As many as 122 candidates he had spoken to so far had given encouraging feedback and, surprisingly, some of them were confident of winning even those seats on which they had not pinned any hopes, Aravind said.

“Many people are asking whether Chiranjeevi will be a king or kingmaker.

I say that he will be the king.

In our lingo, however, Chief Minister is the chief servant of the State,” he explained.He complimented the Election Commission for conducting the elections in a free and fair manner. Chief Electoral Officer IV Subba Rao had addressed the complaints immediately, he said.

While Rayalaseema would be a cakewalk, the south coastal districts from East Godavari to Nellore were also highly favourable to the party, it maintained.

Speaking to the media here today on the eve of the second phase, party political affairs committee members P Upendra, KSR Murthy and general secretary Umamalleswara Rao said it would win about 70 Assembly seats in the next round.

The Congress and Telugu Desam were spending huge amounts of money and plying the people with liquor, and the police were largely unable to check this, they maintained.

But Chiranjeevi’s campaign had drawn massive crowds and the people would teach a lesson to the corrupt Congress, they added, pointing out that the chief minister had kept scaling down the numbers he expected his party to bag. Beginning with 260, he was now citing 160. Even this might end up at 60, they joked.

As for the Telugu Desam, the PRP leaders wondered where it would find the money for the cash transfer scheme (CTS) and ridiculed it for jumping the gun by even handing out application forms for the same.

In contrast, the PRP’s promises were credible, they said.

KSR Murthy urged the voters to weigh their options especially carefully in the parliamentary constituencies and keep in mind the fact that the Congress MPs from the State had failed to secure anything from the Centre. In fact, they had merely looked on as Tamil Nadu walked away with several projects, he said.

With polling for the 13th Assembly in the State getting over today, the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) is hoping to become a king-maker in governmentformation.

It expects to win at least 105 seats across the State and hopes that there will be a hung Assembly. Under such circumstances, the PRP would become the kingmaker and decide who should form the next government.

The PRP office in Hyderabad remained silent without any activity while the other two major parties — the TDP and the Congress — celebrated the occasion claiming that victory was theirs.

Though PRP leaders turned up at the party office, they stayed away from the media and hesitated to make any comment on the second phase of polling.

PRP president Chiranjeevi, who’s contesting the Tirupati Assembly constituency, remained in Tirupati observing the polling patterns throughout the day. He was scheduled to go to Palacole in the morning, come back to Tirupati by afternoon and return to Hyderabad.

But, he stayed back in Tirupati in the backdrop of yesterday’s incidents.

The PRP leaders hope to do well in the second phase as the turnout of women voters was phenomenal in the coastal Andhra districts.

PRP political affairs committee member P Upendra stated that youngsters and women had voted in the PRP’s favour.

“The turnout of women and youth was very good. In fact, the youth outnumbered elders. All the youth have voted for us. The women votes should go either to the TDP or come to us. My feeling is that women have voted in our favour,’’ Upendra reasoned.

The PRP hopes to win about 70 seats in the second phase and with 35 seats in the first phase, its tally may reach 105. The expectation of the party leaders is that the Congress and the TDP might get about 110 to 120 seats each, resulting in a hung Assembly. They feel happy as the party managed to put up a better fight in the second phase than the first. According to them, Chiranjeevi is going to win with impressive margins from Palacole and Tirupati.

The PRP has done very well in East and West Godavari districts and Krishna district, the party leaders opine.

They expect to win about six parliamentary seats. According to them, the PRP will win Anakapalli, Kakinada, Narasapuram, Machilipatnam, Guntur and Rajampeta parliamentary constituencies.

Tension mounted as the slogan-shouting Congress workers’ demonstration in front of the hotel was countered by Praja Rajyam cadre. Amidst angry gesticulations, both groups indulged in heated exchanges and almost came to blows when police wielded batons to disperse them.

A visibly upset Chiranjeevi, who is contesting from Tirupati, took serious objection to the police’s “partisan attitude” and insisted that the search be done only in the presence of the media. Denying the charge that he was disbursing money to the women Congress workers, Chiranjeevi told the police party that he was only discussing poll strategy with his party functionaries and studying the voters list.

Addressing media persons, he termed the incident as a “cheap drama” enacted by the Congress leaders out of frustration over outcome of Thursday’s election. He criticised the police for trying to raid his room just because a “bunch” of Congress workers shouted slogans in front of the hotel.

Mr. Chiranjeevi urged the Election Commission and the Chief Electoral Officer to ensure a free and fair election on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Congress candidate, B. Karunakar Reddy, sought to turn the tables on Mr. Chiranjeevi. He told media persons that it was the megastar’s deliberate attempt to make a “flop” into a “hit movie”. Piqued by PR leaders’ charge, he took media persons to search his house. “I have nothing to hide, my house is open,” he said.

Hyderabad Special Correspondent adds: Taking serious note of these developments, the Election Commission decided to relieve five police officials of election duty in Tirupati and post them elsewhere.

They include Ammi Reddy, Additional SP, Nagore Reddy, DSP, Narayan Reddy, Circle Inspector and Ramachandra Reddy, Sub-Inspector. It also deputed V. Prasada Rao, APSP Commandant, to supervise law and order in Tirupati constituency and despatched two additional police platoons to the town. The Praja Rajyam, however, demanded transfer of Chittoor SP, K. Lakshmi Reddy.
