TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao’s sudden decision to leave for New Delhi on Thursday evening along with his family led to speculations in political circles that he was up to some game plan to contain the growing rebellion within the party.

Rao, it may be mentioned, is known for creating political drama whenever he smells a crisis in the party. Soon after the polling in the state, he had gone to Delhi and announced his support to NDA, giving an impression that NDA was all set to come to power.

His decision to call off the state executive meeting scheduled to be held on Friday and leave for the national capital had led to all kinds of speculation.

His nephew and party leader T Harish Rao sought to clarify that there was no political agenda in KCR’s Delhi visit. He told the media that KCR had gone to Delhi to take part in the oath-taking ceremony of newly-elected members of Lok Sabha on June 1 and that he would return the next day. But he did not explain why KCR first scheduled the state executive meeting and then left for Delhi abruptly, that too four days ahead of the Lok Sabha session. Harish Rao maintained that KCR’s trip is nothing but a holiday tour which he planned to spend with his family.

The recent election has been one gripping event for the Telugu folks and surprisingly, there was a huge betting that took place this time and that too at exorbitant rates. Due to this, news has been arriving that many have now become beggars having lost a lot of money. The worst hit among this are the middle class people who have now landed on roads. It is heard that just in the west Godavari district, the betting was upto the tune of Rs 300 crores. While some have taken loans, others have sold their fertile lands and put their money into various forms of betting.

The hottest districts for betting were the dual Godavari, Krishna, Guntur districts and the stakes were like a particular party will win so many seats or a particular candidate will win at a particular place. Incidentally, the palakollu segment where Chiranjeevi contested had betting going up to the tune of Rs 18 crores. Similarly, in the Ungutur segment of west Godavari, the stake was Rs 30 crores. The highlight is, one of the candidates in the Godavari districts was so confident about his win that he betted upto Rs 18 crores, he lost and now he has put his home for sale. And there is another one who has pledged his 25 acre land and now he has nothing left with him. Even the Vijayawada Lok Sabha had a similar situation with many saying Lagadapati will lose and betting heavily on that. Many from the coastal belt have lost out heavily and now the fear of suicides has been looming largely out there.

Even Hyderabad was not far behind as some high stake betting happened here too and that too by the Congress folks. One MLA was heard saying that he spent 3 crores for canvassing and earned 3 crores in betting. And there is another one leader from the Congress who earned a cool Rs 5 crores due to the betting. But then, a word of advise to all those middle class people who wanted to make money, such things are only for those who can afford it, don’t do betting else you will end up as beggars.

The Congress elected Manmohan Singh as leader of its parliamentary party on Tuesday, a formal stamp for Singh take charge as prime minister for a second consecutive term.

The Congress parliamentary party also elected Sonia Gandhi as its chairperson.

The formalities set rolling the process of government formation, a day after Singh resigned as prime minister on Monday.

The Cabinet met for the last time on Monday and recommended that the President dissolve the 14th Lok Sabha. According to a Rashtrapati Bhawan communique, the President accepted the recommendation and signed an order dissolving the Lok Sabha in exercise of the powers conferred upon her by sub-clause (b) of clause (2) Article 85 of the Constitution.

Later, Singh met President Pratibha Patil to tender his resignation while, in keeping with the transition drill, he was asked to continue till an alternative arrangement (read his being invited to form the government again) was made.

At the same time, Election Commission handed over the list of newly-elected Lok Sabha MPs to the President, clearing the way for constitution of the new House. With this, the drill is almost complete for Singh to stake claim.

While there is no dispute that Congress is the only claimant to forming the government, sources said the President would have to go through the motion of Singh staking claim. It comes in the light of the convention that Congress could not be automatically invited by the President as it did not have the desired 273 MPs.

The day of hectic activities would be accompanied by a meeting of CLP leaders and PCC chiefs with party chief Sonia Gandhi and the PM. It is being seen as a continuation of the exercise to tone up party organisation in states.

With strong performances in a clutch of states, including those where the Congress is either dependent on allies or which have rival governments, there is an eagerness to tap the positive mood.

Prajarajyam president K Chiranjeevi on Monday was formally elected leader of Prajarajyam Legislature Party.

The party president interacted with the newly elected legislators, most of them first-timers, for a little over two hours. The party won 18 assembly seats in the recently concluded elections and is the second largest opposition party after the TDP. The party has a lone member in the Legislative Council, B Raghavendra Reddy.

One of the legislators, who shared details of the PRLP meeting, said the party had resolved to play a constructive role in Assembly by encouraging the government on issues that are of help to the masses and strongly oppose any kind of anti-people policies. “Our criticism will be constructive and all issues of social concern would be accorded top priority,” he told them.

The elected members informed Chiranjeevi that the legislature party would abide by all decisions taken by the PRLP president. The PRP chief meanwhile assured members that he would take them into confidence while reviewing reasons for the failure of the party in the recently-concluded elections. Chiranjeevi told them that he was in possession of voting statistics that reflect the performance of the party at the polling booth level.

Later, Chiranjeevi introduced the newly elected members to the media and thanked people for helping them to create a political space. “We have been elected by the people to solve their problems and we will just do that,” he said and added that the names of the party whip and secretary would be announced very soon.

Those present at the meeting included Elleti Maheshwar Reddy (Nirmal), Anil Eravathri (Balkonda), Bandaru Satyanand Rao (Kothapeta), Ganta Srinivasa Rao (Anakapalli), Muttam Srinivas Rao alias Avanthi Srinivas (Bheemili), Chintalapudi Venkatramayya (Gajuwaka), Panchakarla Ramesh (Pendurthi), Kurasala Kanna Babu (Kakinada Rural), Pantham Gandhi Mohan (Peddapuram), Eeli Nani (Tadepalligudem), Yellampalli Srinivas (Vijayawada West), Yelamanchili Ravi (Vijayawada East), A Rambabu (Giddaluru), Sridhar Krishna Reddy Mungamuru (Nellore City), Bhuma Sobha Nagi Reddy (Allagadda) and Vanga Geeta (Pithapuram). The lone PRP MLA who could not make it to the meeting was Katasani Rami Reddy from Banaganapalle, as he was pre-occupied with some work in his constituency.

Meanwhile, the political affairs committee meeting of PRP was indefinitely postponed as several senior leaders were away in districts.

Soon after the results are announced on Saturday, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) president, Ms Sonia Gandhi, called the Chief Minister, Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, over phone and congratulated him over the 157 seats ‘tremendous’ performance of the party in the polls.

“It is your personal victory. The Congress has gained the needed majority on its own to form the government in the State and the credit is yours,” Ms Gandhi is stated to have told the Chief Minister. She also expressed happiness over the party’s contribution of 33 seats to the Lok Sabha from the State.

She is understood to have particularly referred to Dr Reddy’s victory in the polls despite the defeat of heavy weights like the PCC chief, Mr D Srinivas, the Speaker, Mr K R Suresh Reddy, and some senior ministers.

Chandrababu Naidu is rueing the day when as an important constituent of the NDA government, he failed to ask then prime minister A B Vajpayee for dismissal of Narendra Modi in 2002 when Gujarat was burning. Instead, Naidu bargained for an extra allocation of rice for AP. Result: Modi consolidated his position in Gujarat, but Naidu lost his grip over Andhra Pradesh.

Elections 2009 have put the Telugu Desam party (TDP) in its place once again. The electorate gave the regional party 93 seats, making it sit in the opposition ranks for the second time running. The elections also greatly reduced the role of its president N Chandrababu Naidu in national politics by giving him just six Lok Sabha seats. “It is a message to Naidu to reinvent the party. The party did not get a single minority vote,” a political analyst said. AP has 294 assembly seats and 42 Lok Sabha seats.

Till Friday, Naidu was harbouring the hopes of returning as chief minister. In fact, during the last phase of campaigning, he had declared at several public meetings that he was the next chief minister. His misplaced confidence stemmed from two factors, one stitching up a grand alliance with the TRS and the left parties and two, announcing a series of sops including free colour TV and cash transfer scheme.

In hindsight, the grand alliance actually spelt doom for the TDP. In Telangana, the people soundly rejected the TRS with whom Naidu had struck the alliance. The results showed that the TRS lost most of the seats it contested to the Congress, implying that the electorate had rejected the party as well as its championing the separate state. “In fact, the TDP would have fared much better than now had it gone alone in the polls,” admitted a TDP leader. The TDP won more seats in Telangana than the TRS.

The second factor of free sops too did not work for Naidu. Apart from free colour TV, Naidu had promised Rs 2,000 per month for BPL families, Rs 1,500 per month for poor families and Rs 1,000 per month for middle-class families.

But by giving the TDP more than its tally of 47 the last time around, the electorate has ensured that the TDP and Naidu stay politically alive. The election results have also ensured that he has no significant role to play in the centre. “Not only the TDP, the entire so called ‘Third Front’ has been rejected,” a leader said.

Devender Goud is the man who transformed from powerful position to a begging stand with his foolish political moves. He walked out from TDP and started a new party Nava Telengana. He assumed that he has huge following in public and is just next to Chandrababu in fame or following.

But he understood that his NTP is not getting any mileage in public and hence joined PRP by merging his party completely into it. PRP gave him a Lok Sabha ticket from Malkajgiri and Assembly ticket from Ibrahimpatnam where he lost both. This has proved that Goud has no stand in his own constituency itself.

Since TDP also turned pro Telengana he has no other go than begging Naidu to take him back into TDP. Otherwise his political chapter gets closed for ever, opines a political leader.

“His biggest mistake in life is joining with Chiranjeevi. He would have gone back to TDP as and when it declared its positive bent for Telengana” said the leader.

It is anyway tough time for him to regain his political career.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani Saturday spoke to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and congratulated him on the surprise victory for the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the national elections.

During the brief conversation, Manmohan Singh thanked Advani, who was prime ministerial candidate for the opposition National Democratic Alliance, and sought both his support and constructive criticism in running the government, an official in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.

“We must open a new chapter in the working relations between the government and the principal opposition,” the official quoted the prime minister’s as telling Advani, the leader of the opposition in the present Lok Sabha.

Earlier in the day, when trends pointed towards a victory of sorts for the UPA, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit met with the prime minister at his official residence. The Congress has made a clean sweep of all seven seats in the capital.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi also greeted the prime minister, while Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was first among the foreign dignitaries, said the PMO official.

“The prime minister also managed to attend to some official work.”

According to Congress general secretary Prithvi Raj Chavan, the prime minister also watched television in the morning.

“Given the current economic situation, he was extremely concerned about formation of a stable government,” he told reporters, adding a meeting of the cabinet would be called in the next two-three days.

Chavan said the party will have its own meeting and Sonia Gandhi will nominate leaders of both the houses in parliament before formally approaching President Pratibha Patil for the formation of the new government.
